Maui No Ka Oi Got Down and Dirty with West Maui Cycles Bike Mechanic!

We're a family bike shop on Maui, so don’t let that title fool you! This Maui bike blog article is about getten’ down and dirty as in Maui mountain biking!

We’re thrilled the popular Maui No Ka Oi Magazine recently published a story describing the excitement and adrenaline of Maui mountain biking! Mountain bike rider and writer, Lehia Apana of Maui No Ka Oi magazine, bravely put her fate into the hands of West Maui Cycle bike mechanic, Aaron Reichert (Moose), to gain firsthand experience of what is in store for anyone lucky enough to go mountain bike riding on Maui! Lehia begins with an enticing recap of her experience single-track riding on the makeshift west Maui mountain biking trails and finishes with a spine tingling description of the her descent down the infamous Skyline bike trail on Haleakala.

Quotes from Maui No Ka Oi Maui mountain biking article, beginning with vivid descriptions of the mountain biking single track trails in the West Maui mountains:

“Oh yeah, you got this,” my guide, Moose, yells as I hurtle past him down the steep single-track trail, snaking through knee-high grass and manmade berms.

I’m in attack mode: butt off the saddle, pedals parallel to the ground and knees slightly bent. As gravity propels the bike to full momentum, I repeat one of Moose’s favorite lines and try to convince myself that “speed is your friend.”

Fighting my instinct to slow down through the rocky, rust-colored terrain, I slam down on the pedals and push forward. Moments later, I clench the rear brake and skid to a stop along a flat patch of dirt.

To the untrained eye, it seems like a barren field dotted with rocky outcroppings and dirt mounds. But a true mountain biker will see a free ride trail with drops that could crumble even the best shocks, and chutes ripe for high-speed descents.

And a little info on a recently formed Maui mountain bike community chapter, too. Speaking of Moose, founder of a local Maui chapter of the IMBA (International Mountain Bike Association):

Through the IMBA Maui chapter, Moose hopes to establish legitimate alternatives to guerrilla trails like those torn down in Makawao. In doing so, the group plans to partner with land managers and trail designers to create safe and environmentally sustainable riding areas.

“Between Polipoli, Makawao and the West Side, the potential here is unreal because we have so many different climate zones to ride in,” he explains, adding that the quickest way to experience Maui’s diverse landscape is along Haleakala’s Skyline Trail.

While my body is thrashed, my mind is still high on endorphins. Never mind the aching muscles or bruised ego—this is fun stuff.

As I reflect on the past couple hours, I begin to understand the appeal of mountain biking. It’s the childlike freedom, the chance to reconnect with the outdoors and the thrill of danger. There’s no trace of civilization, no cars to contend with, and despite the chaos of the descent, the beauty of this place is staggering.

Looking for an enjoyable bike ride during your vacation to Maui? While the Olowalu petroglyph bike ride rewards with opportunity to experience historic Hawaiian petroglyph, the 'moderate' bike ride is noMaui Bicycle Vacation, Lahaina to Olowalu Petroglyphs Maui Bike Ridet overly time consuming. This Maui bike ride is a great way to see one of Maui's historical sites while enjoying a bike ride in Maui.

The beginning of this ride is paved road running along the ocean until you get to Olowalu. Then, you'll ride dirt on a short moutain bike trail ride out to the petroglyph site. Begin at West Maui Cycles, where we'll set you up with either a high performance mountain bike rental or a Specialized Comfort bike for your bike ride to the Olowalu petroglyph.

Lahaina to Olowalu Petroglyphs Bike Route Map

First, stop at West Maui Cycles to pick up any last second riding supplies (need a spare tube) or rent a bike in Lahaina. From the bike shop, ride south on Highway 30 out of Lahaina Town towards Kahului. Just out of Lahaina, the road narrows into two lanes to provide an oceanside scenic bike ride to the Olowalu Petroglyph. At the south end of Lahaina, Puamanu is the first beach park on your right. After riding approximately 3 miles out Lahaina, Launiupoko beach park is on the right at the only stop light after leaving Lahaina. When you see the Highway 30 Mile Marker 15, approximately 6.0 miles from West Maui Cyles bike shop, you'll notice a group of large trees shading the highway. Take a left just before the Olowalu general store and ride on the Olowalu Village road behind the store. Look for the Olowalu Petroglyph cultural site sign. Just before the old water tower, turn left onto a dirt trail and ride toward the Olowalu valley. The petroglyph will be about a third of a mile up the road on the right. Believed to be more than 300 years old, approximately 70 petroglyph drawings are visible. Be careful and plese respect this cultural site. The handrail and wooden platform are unsafe and should not be used! Carry plenty of water and a spare tire tube.

The Olowalu Petroglyph are only a short ride from Lahaina town, a fun half day ride for intermediate bike riders and aggressive beginners. Leisure and beginning riders may want to enjoy a full day riding while enjoying stops at Puamana and Launiupoko beach parks to break up the segments with ocean swimming. Consider riding to the petroglyphs in the morning. Stop in Olowalu, grab a sandwich from Star Noodle's sister restaurant, Leoda's Kitchen and Pie Shop to eat a picnic lunch at the petroglyph. Then, on the way back from the petroglyph, make another stop at Leoda's for a pie before the ride back to Lahaina. Work off lunch with with refreshing dips at Launiupoko and Puamana beach parks during the bike ride back into Lahaina. NOTE: Leoda's Kitchen and Pie Shop is scheduled to open in Fall 2011.

Maui Bicycle Tips - How Much Does it Cost to Ship a Bike to Maui?

One of the popular questions we answer about renting bikes on Maui is, "Does it cost less to rent a bike or should I ship my bike to Maui?" Renting a bike on Maui usually saves money, time and always avoids hassles associated with shipping a bike on an airline. Often, when customers return their bike rentals, they express being happy to have saved money renting a bicycle while appreciating extra to enjoy their vacation! Renting a bike on vacation avoids time needed to disassemble, package, and ship your bike before departing for Maui and the time to unpack and reassemble a bicycle after arrival. Renting a bike lets you ride longer because you won't need to repeat the process to ship your bike home after your bicycle vacation on Maui. Beyond time savings, renting a bike on Maui avoids typical high airline surcharge fees to ship a bike by air. We performed unscientific research to estimate the cost to ship a bike to Maui, including a container to ship your bike and the airline fees to ship a bike. Compare the total bike shipping costs to the cost of renting a bike on Maui. First, you'll need to get a container to ship your bike in, usually a cardboard bike box or a hard plastic rigid box. We found box prices between $34.95 for a standard bike shipping box to $99.95 for a heavy duty re-usuable bike shipping box. With the exception of Quantas and Singapore Airlines, major air carriers servicing Maui charge additional fees to ship your bicycle to Maui. We found typical 'air cargo' or 'sports equipment' shipping fees to range from $75 on Alaska Air up to $200 on United Airlines, each way! The airlines enforce maximum weight and container dimension limitations, including the box weight, adding further fees. For example, Hawaiian Air charges an additional $25. each way for 'excess weight fee' if your bike and box is over the 50 pound limit and below 70 pounds. The list below provides a list of of the major airlines servicing Hawaii along with their estimated ONE WAY cost to ship a bicycle to Maui. You'll also find airline carrier phone number and wherever possible a link to the bike shipping information page of the carrier's web sites to help you determine the current bike shipping prices and regulations:
