Does anyone ever get tired of watching videos of riders mountain biking on Maui? Since we have another one to share with you this week, I hope not! Last week we presented a short bike ride video from a recent customer who used a GoPro helmet cam to film their Makawao Forest ride. This week, we found another trail rider who rode in the Makawo Forest in July and captured his experience on video, too. Hang on to the handlebars while you watch C. 9 Mountain Bike Riders on the West Maui Mountain Bike Trails

While gearing up to prepare ride descriptions for our weekly group mountain bike rides on Sunday afternoons, we got out and rode a few of the West Maui mountain bike trails! As the images from our rides show, the mountain bike trails above West Maui are mostly moderate climbing with fun red dirt trails, plenty of challenges and spectacular scenery. Depending on where you ride in West Maui, you may need to navigate your way through ruts, over tree roots, around lava rocks and sometimes through tall grasses. Even if you don’t climb all the way to the top of the 5,000 feet West Maui Mountains, you’ll be rewarded with amazing scenic views. And riding back down after climbing the trails, the downhills provide plenty of off road cruising on fast single track trails and a few wide open spots to pass your fellow riders!

Though there are no official mountain bike trails open for public riding in West Maui, if you are courteous and respectful, you can usually find more than a few trails to ride on Lahaina side of Maui. Some like to ride in the defunct pineapple fields above West Maui while others make their way riding the utility maintenance access roads or ideally find friends with permission from the owner to ride on private lands. Regardless of preference, ride a couple thousand feet up where the uphill bike climbing effort is rewarded with amazing scenery and views! Once heavily planted for commercial agriculture production, the mostly abandoned sugar cane and pineapple fields above Lahaina and the Kaanapali resort provide opportunities to utilize the former ag roads as mountain bike trails in West Maui. After climbing a thousand 1000 foot or so in elevation, be sure to pause for a hydration break long enough to enjoy the coastal views extending from Kapalua to the Kaanapali Resort or south into Lahaina and beyond. On clear days you'll be able to see for miles and miles! Shoot a photo of the cruise ships moored in the channel between Maui and the neighbor island of Lanai. Pose with your mountain bike in the foreground and share your best Maui mountain biking photo with us on our Facebook page. During the winter months, be careful to not get distracted by the whales jumping while biking down one of trails! Please be courteous and respectful to landowners.

Efforts are underway to open access to areas for the public to enjoy mountain biking in West Maui. While the XTerra World Championshipbike courses are asked about many times a week, since large sections of the course are on private lands they currently remain closed to the general public. Efforts are being explored to open at least portions of the XTerra course for mountain bike riding and some day we hope to have a mountain bike park or a connected trail system in West Maui. The Kapalua Resort and related golf course management companies control and manage parts of the XTerra course while other private land owners grant permission only for the organized races. To get an idea of the XTerra course and where mountain bike trails may someday co-exist for public use, go hiking on the former Village golf course hiking trails at Kapalua Resort.

If you’d like to get involved or support mountain biking on Maui, join the Maui Mountain Bike Coalition (MMBC) or contribute to support their efforts. Working in conjunction with the IMBA (International Mountain Bike Association), the MMBC is the state’s first local IMBA chapter and is working in partnership with the Hawaii State Department of Land and Natural Resources (DNLR) to successfully gain access to land for more mountain bike trails on Maui. Among other efforts to increase access for mountain biking on Maui, working with private land owners and the county the chapter’s plans include developing a mountain bike trail system for West Maui and eventually Lanai and Molokai. Find out more about the MMBC on their Facebook page where you can learn how how you can get involved in their latest trail building activities slated for this summer with a new mountain bike trail in the Makawao Forest. Spread the word about the next MMBC meeting on Sunday, April 21. After the meeting, help with trail work and go for a ride with a potluck bbq. Join the MMBC local chapter of the IMBA or make a donation. Or, talk to Moose when you stop in the West Maui Cycles bike shop in Lahaina. Moose is our in-resident expert on Maui bike trails and one of the organizers of the local chapter of the MMBC.

Wood Grain Trikes and Bamboo Mountain Bikes Found by Maui Bike Shop!

When I'm researching bike information or when I can't get out for a Maui mountain bike ride, I cruise the web in search of interesting bike news from Maui and around the world. Sometimes, I find amazing things going on in the world of bicycling and bike riding! Remember the hands free mind controlled neuro bike shifter video I shared a few months ago? This time, I found a really cool wood grain trike and a bamboo bicycle. The wood grain trike is handcrafted by an artisan in New Zealand, who founded a custom bike company with his son after realizing the popularity of the one of a kind faux wood bike finish. Check out the video below showing the process. Then, take a look at the bamboo bike video afterward. I wonder why nobody on Maui has started making bamboo bikes!

Each year, Specialized hosts their Specialized Dealer Event to introduce dealers to the latest Specialized cycling gear, products and new bicycles for the upcoming year. This year, was no exception with the 2013 Specialized Dealer events taking place at Snowbird Ski Resort in Utah earlier this week. I’m enthusiastic about the new 2013 Specialized bike lineup and new gear! A short summary of my week in Utah attending the 2013 Specialized Bicycle Dealer Event:

Flying to Utah from Maui, I left Saturday after closing the Lahaina bike shop and arrived into Salt Lake on Sunday mid-morning. Being West Maui Cycles is a Specialized bike dealer, it was enlightening to tour the new 250,000 square foot Specialized distribution warehouse to see where some of the Specialized bike gear and merchandise comes from prior to arriving at the bike shop in West Maui. Monday, along with more than 500 Specialized bike dealers, we gathered to learn about the latest 2013 Specialized bicycle products and gear. Over 200 product specialists were on hand to demonstrate the latest bikes and gear while answering questions and discussing bike technology with the dealers. Monday featured the latest Specialized bicycle products for women and kids in the morning followed up with all the details about the 2013 Specialized performance mountain bikes the dealers would be riding on Tuesday morning.

Tuesday morning, the famed Snowbird bike trails were ours to experience riding the 2013 Specialized performance mountain bikes! Though my mountain bike riding was limited due to my lingering broken fingers suffered riding the mountain bike trails in West Maui last month, it was a great experience to gain knowledge of the new Specialized mountain bikes. Witnessing the auto-sag equipped 2013 Specialized Pro Camber Carbon 29’er and Epic 29’ers burning down the bike trails provided me a good sense why the top world cup mountain bike riders and xterra cross riders are riding Specialized bikes! Specialized bike mechanics were on hand to keep the dealer inflicted rider damages to a minimum. One of the cool new bikes Specialized had on hand was the new Specialized Turbo electric bike. We featured this new electric bike in an earlier electric bike blog article just after Specialized released the bike in Europe earlier this year. Unfortunately, the US market won’t get to see this exciting new electric bike until 2014. Like the rest of you waiting on the ebike, with a top speed of 28 miles per hour, we can’t wait to make this bike available as a Maui electric bike rental! Do you want one? Wouldn’t you like to buzz along the Pali at speeds up to 28 mph without burning gas while commuting on your daily oceanfront bike ride from Lahaina to Maalea harbor? It could also be a great addition for bike tours on Maui.

Weds, the final day of the 2013 Specialized bicycle dealer launch event, the new Specialized Crux cross racing bikes were set up for the dealers to try their skill maneuvering Snowbird’s mtb trails in the morning. The bike equipment demo tents and parking lots around Snowbird were well equipped with the latest in gear for performance road bikes. Specialized made a few of their new Roubaix SL4 bicycles and several other 2013 performance road bikes available for the bike dealers to take demo rides on. The afternoon finished up the week of bicycle events with a series of fun cyclocross races. Specialized dealers and company staff competed for the right to claim the Crossbird 2013  championship.
