Romantic Ideas for Valentine’s Day Maui Bike Ride

Soon after arriving at the bike shop in Lahaina (West Maui Cycles) and beginning the day getting a few island bike rentals out to riders picking up bikes, I answered a phone call. The caller arrives on Maui this Saturday and is planning a few bike rides during her Maui bicycle vacation. Being an avid road bike rider, she had already made her online bike rental reservation for our Specialized Performance Road bike rental to enjoy a week of bike touring on Maui. She suddenly realized she’ll be here over Valentine’s Day and had not planned on riding with her fiancé. Now, she wanted to spend Valentine’s day with her fiancé and was calling to inquire if we rent bikes suitable for an inexperienced bike rider in good condition. She also asked if I had any good ideas for fun bike rides on Maui, where she and her fiancé could enjoy a romantic valentines day togethor touring Maui by bicycle.

I thought for about a half a second before recommending she rent our Electra HellBetty tandem cruiser for a morning of leisurely riding in Lahaina. Since their accommodations are in Kaanapali, the bike shop in Lahaina will be easy to get to and a good point to begin their day of bike riding on Maui after picking up their rental bike. I suggested riding the Electra HellBetty tandem into Lahaina Town for a leisurely cruise on Front Street followed by a mid-morning breakfast at one of the charming restaurants in Lahaina. Since we include a lock with our bike rentals, it will be easy to secure the bike rental while enjoying breakfast. After exploring Lahaina by bicycle, they’ll come back to the bike shop to pick up a couple Specialized Hybrid comfort bike rentals. For the second half of their fun day of bike riding on Maui, I suggested the Lahaina to Olowalu Petroglyphs bike ride. The bike ride to the Olowalu petroglyph is approximately 6.3 miles and another mile or so of easy off road trail riding to and from the petroglyph. I recommended a stop for lunch at Leoda’s Sandwich and Pie Shop in Olowalu before returning to the bike shop to drop off their hybrid bike rentals in Lahaina.

We all do it. We ride the Maui hills for the challenge and bragging rites! The West Maui Loop and the mother of all road climbs Haleakala. Maui mountain bikers love the steep climbs around Poli Poli State Parkand the West Maui Mountains. And, don't forget the ups and downs of Classic Mac Nuts north of Wailuku town. What we all do, but never think about, is shifting.

No I am not crazy! There is a right time and a very wrong time to shift your bike gears to an easier ratio. You have to think and plan ahead. You see, shifting under load during a climb will not only make a lot of chain noise, shifting at the wrong time could cause the following damages with expensive repairs:

1. Bent or snapped bike chain
2. Bent chain rings
3. Bent or snapped derailuer hanger
4. Bent or snapped rear or front derailer
5. Or worst, all of the above FAIL

So, please save yourself a long walk home or a wait after your Maui bike ride: Think before you shift those bike gears!!

Sacred Hearts Bazaar Gets Electra Bike Donation from Maui Bike Shop

Even after being in the Maui bicycle business for more than 20 years, our West Maui bike shop never tires of giving back to the community by participating in various local fundraising events or extending discounts to those serving our local community. Raising a family of our own on Maui, we understand the challenges local families face and know how important it is for local businesses to participate in the Maui community. As locally owned family bicycle shop, West Maui Cycles continues to be involved and give back whenever possible. One such opportunity presented itself last weekend when we were able to help Sacred Hearts School in Lahaina with their annual fund raising bazaar.

This year was the 41st Annual Sacred Hearts Bazaar! The community event has become a fun local tradition for the entire community as the 150 year old Lahaina school count on the two day event to supply funding for many for their student activities and very worthwhile educational programs. This year, the annual Sacred Hearts Bazaar was held on Friday and Saturday, March 1st and 2cnd. In addition to supplying two Electra Bike beach cruisers for the charity auction, we also converted our mobile bike shop into a popup shaved iced station. The shaved ice stand was staffed by West Maui Cycles owners and employees with proceeds contributed to the event. The shave ice station was set up in the school courtyard for revelers to enjoy while playing the traditional carnival games. Everyone had a great time and our bike shop is honored to contribute to the school and this very worthwhile family fun event in Lahaina! Mahalo for the opportunity.

Donating bicycles for the 2013 Sacred Hearts charity auction and supplying the shaved ice station are just a couple ways we participate in the Maui community. Throughout the year, we help our local fireman, police, lifeguards and other Maui County First Responders stay in shape for the rigors of their difficult physical jobs by extending a 15% discount at our bike store in Lahaina. Maui Mountain Biking in Lanai with 2012 TriLanai Highlight Review

Only a week after the 2012 XTerra World Championship at Kapalua, this past weekend was the TriLanai. Still in Maui county, the island of Lanai is just a short boat ride across the channel from West Maui. West Maui Cycles packed up most of the bike rental fleet and placed it on Expeditions Ferry for the journey from Lahaina to Lanai. Once on Lanai, we set up a makeshift bike shop at the Four Seasons Resorts Lanai for the 4th annual TriLanai triathlon.

After a podium finish for third place last weekend at Xterra Maui, Conrad “The Caveman” Stoltz made Team Specialized proud again with a win in the TriLanai competition. Stoltz led the entire field from start to finish,with the next closest racer finishing nearly 10 minutes after Stoltz. Juan-Garcia Naveu, from Kehei Maui, took third place with a respectable time of just over 1 hour, 26 seconds. Jefferson Oishi, from Lahaina Maui, finished TriLanai triathlon with a time of just over 1 hour and 30 minutes and was followed closely by Scott Mcgill, also of Lahaina Maui, finishing 3 minutes later.

Along with Stoltz, another professional competing in the TriLanai triathlon included Bree Wee of Kona. Wee took the championship among the women racing, completing the challenging triathlon on Lanai with a time of 1 hour, 30 minutes and 30 seconds. Heather O’More, from Lahaina, was the top woman from Maui to complete the TriLanai. Her time of 1 hour, 47 seconds was good enough to win her division of age 20-29 women.

Congratulations to all the TriLanai winners and participants. We hope you can come back again next year and race in the 2013 TriLanai triathlon on Lanai!

XTerra Maui Highlights and another Triathlon in Maui County, TriLanai

Last weekend the best of the world’s best off-road triathletes competed in the 2012 XTerra World Championship at Kapalua in West Maui. While the 2012 XTerra may be remembered for the Tsunami warnings with evacuations of some of the XTerra athletes, there was plenty of exciting racing action on the XTerra courses too! Being the closest bike shop servicing the XTerra Maui, we were super busy and happy we could supply rental bikes and perform bike repairs when needed!!  Fortunately, we had extra bike mechanics on hand and were able to help several racers who had experienced breakdowns requiring bike repairs and adjustments or bike parts. Several bike rentals were used in the race and  we were right there for XTerra practice runs and on race day for last second bike adjustments! Congratulations to the 2012 XTerra World Champion Javier Gomez! Gomez, from Spain and racing in his first XTerra, conquered the combined XTerra course in 2 hours, 26 minutes and 54 seconds! Earning the $20,000 check, Gomez claimed the XTerra World Championship title nearly a full minute ahead of his closest challenger, US XTerra racer Josiah Middaugh. After claiming the XTerra bike course was lame a couple days prior to the race, mountain bike favorite Conrad The Caveman Stolz couldn’t muster better than his third place podium finish. He still seemed happy with his performance the overall finish and who could blame him. TRILANAI Off-Road Triathlon on Lanai

The county of Maui hosts the TriLanai triathlon on Maui.

The Maui bike action keeps happening this weekend when many of the XTerra athletes and fans head to the Maui County island of Lanai to compete in the TriLanai Triathlon. A little less intense than the prior weekend of Maui XTerra World Championship, the racers and race teams thoroughly enjoy the quiet of Lanai and competing in the slightly less challenging .5 mile swim, 10 mile mountain bike ride and a 3 mile run on the famed Challenge at Manele Golf course. Earlier this week, we took most of the West Maui Cycles bike rental fleet with us across the channel to Lanai. We loaded the performance mountain bikes and cross bikes on the Expeditions Ferry. Barely a week to go until XTERRA World Championship returns to West Maui for the third time in as many years. Though difficult to imagine what more could be done to improve upon the success of the off road triathlon at Kapalua, it's no surprise the organizers continue to strive for perfection.

As the routine entails before important race days, the organizers have been busy fine tuning the running course and bike trails for the 2013 XTERRA World Championship to ensure everything is ready for the athletes competing and fans attending next weekend. On the women's side, I think Heather Jackson has a great chance to win at Kapalua and looking forward to see Specialized Team Rider Conrad Stoltz earn his fifth XTERRA World Championship.
